Donald Trump Set to Make Millions from Golf Diplomacy
Donald Trump says he's the saviour of world golf. But in his second term, he’s using the White House to seal deals that could make him millions, all under the banner of ‘sports diplomacy.'
Donald Trump has a well-known passion for golf. Before returning to the White House for his second term as president, he turned that hobby into a vehicle for personal profit. Now, with the full power of his office, Trump is raking in the cash.
Saudi Arabia and LIV Golf
Starting in 2021, the Saudi sovereign wealth fund – the Public Investment Fund (PIF) – bankrolled the upstart LIV Golf league with billions of dollars. Trump eagerly partnered with this venture.
In 2022 and 2023, LIV Golf tournaments were hosted at multiple Trump-owned courses (including Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey, Trump National Doral in Florida, and Trump National Washington D.C. in Virginia), more than at any other golf brand’s properties worldwide. According to an investigation by The New York Times, LIV Golf showed an “eagerness to pay” for the privilege of using Trump’s resorts – part of what one reporter called “the ties between the Saudis and the Trump family.”
